Best shocks for Toyota Tacoma 1st gen (1995-2004) 6-lug

Best shocks for Toyota Tacoma 1st gen (1995-2004) 6-lug

Toyota Tacoma of the 1st generation (1995.5, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004) has replaced Toyota Pickup on the US market.

There are two versions of this truck, 5-lug Tacomas coexist with 6-lug Tacomas of the same years. They can be distinguished by wheel bolt pattern.

5-lug Tacoma has lower clearance, less wheel travel and has a completely different suspension from the 6-lug models of the same generation. The shock absorbers lengths and especially mountings are different for 5-lug and 6-lug models.

So we’ll talk about shocks for 5-lug and 6-lug Tacomas separately. 6-lug models can have different engines, cabs and can be 2WD or 4WD, but all 6-lug Tacomas are applicable for similar shocks. The only difference is with the TRD PRO version.

All 5-lug Tacomas shock absorbers differ from ones for 6-lug Tacomas

Best Toyota Tacoma 1st gen. 6-lug Shocks for usual road use are Bilstein 4600 factory height (0’’ lift) shocks.

Pros  Features
Price Shocks for the lifted rear end and for stock rear height are available
Boots present on rear shocks Rear shocks are hydro

The cheapest rear shocks for 1995-2004 Tacoma 6-lug are Hydro series by Skyjacker. They are hydro shocks, not gas-charged ones.

Hydro shocks are softer, but road handling is not so perfect due to technology, though many customers like them for more subjective comfort on bad roads at moderate speeds.

Skyjacker has other series of shocks with same dimensions. Skyjacker offers no front shocks for Tacoma, only rears are available. Skyjacker shocks include boots and installation hardware.

Skyjacker declares that these shocks will fit 0-3’’ rear lift. In reality, they may fit 0’’ rear lift in case of good roads and not loaded truck. But if leaf springs are sagging under heavy weight carried, almost fully collapsing rear suspension on bumps, it’s not much chance that rear shock with 14.82’’ collapsed length will do well. At least you’ll need longer bump stops.
